This page has some information from someone called Joan in Local Studies, who writes:

“I have checked Hayes as to the name Goward but with no success.

Several books of Irish names and English names have also been checked with no success, and books on placenames.

The name has been around for some time as it is included in the 1659 census of Ireland. The townland name is also in Griffiths Valuation”

These documents should be below. It seems that 10 persons, all Irish, lived in Goward in 1659, and a lot more in the a860s when Goward was owned by the Marquis of Downshire.
